Matthew 21:1-17

April 17th, 2011

Matthew 21:1-17 ESV  Now when they drew near to Jerusalem and came to Bethphage, to the Mount of Olives, then Jesus sent two disciples,  (2)  saying to them, "Go into the village in front of you, and immediately you will find a donkey tied, and a colt with her. Untie them and bring them to me.  (3)  If anyone says anything to you, you shall say, 'The Lord needs them,' and he will send them at once."  (4)  This took place to fulfill what was spoken by the prophet, saying,  (5)  "Say to the daughter of Zion, 'Behold, your king is coming to you, humble, and mounted on a donkey, and on a colt, the foal of a beast of burden.'"  (6)  The disciples went and did as Jesus had directed them.  (7)  They brought the donkey and the colt and put on them their cloaks, and he sat on them.  (8)  Most of the crowd spread their cloaks on the road, and others cut branches from the trees and spread them on the road.  (9)  And the crowds that went before him and that followed him were shouting, "Hosanna to the Son of David! Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord! Hosanna in the highest!"  (10)  And when he entered Jerusalem, the whole city was stirred up, saying, "Who is this?"  (11)  And the crowds said, "This is the prophet Jesus, from Nazareth of Galilee."  (12)  And Jesus entered the temple and drove out all who sold and bought in the temple, and he overturned the tables of the money-changers and the seats of those who sold pigeons.  (13)  He said to them, "It is written, 'My house shall be called a house of prayer,' but you make it a den of robbers."  (14)  And the blind and the lame came to him in the temple, and he healed them.  (15)  But when the chief priests and the scribes saw the wonderful things that he did, and the children crying out in the temple, "Hosanna to the Son of David!" they were indignant,  (16)  and they said to him, "Do you hear what these are saying?" And Jesus said to them, "Yes; have you never read, "'Out of the mouth of infants and nursing babies you have prepared praise'?"  (17)  And leaving them, he went out of the city to Bethany and lodged there.

SUMMARY of Text

Main Point of this passage:

“Jesus asserts His Kingly authority through symbolic action which provokes a response.”

Therefore:

“We must marvel at and submit to the Kingly authority of Jesus.”

MAIN POINTS/Outline

Jesus asserts His authority in two symbolic ways:

  1. In the triumphal entry He displays his humble majesty as Savior. (21:1-11)

Read this passage and point out the significance of this symbol.

Zechariah 9:9 – “Say unto the daughters of Jerusalem…”

Psalm 62:11 – “fear not”

Crowds spreading their cloaks – 2 Kings 19:13 – Jehu the King

“Hosanna” – from Psalm 118:25 – “Save us!”

“Blessed is He who comes in the name of the Lord” – Psalm 118:26

Son of David – 2 Samuel 7:12-14

2 Samuel 7:12-14 ESV  When your days are fulfilled and you lie down with your fathers, I will raise up your offspring after you, who shall come from your body, and I will establish his kingdom.  (13)  He shall build a house for my name, and I will establish the throne of his kingdom forever.  (14)  I will be to him a father, and he shall be to me a son. When he commits iniquity, I will discipline him with the rod of men, with the stripes of the sons of men,

The riding into Jerusalem on the donkey was a symbolic statement of a peaceful and humble messiah king who comes bringing salvation to the people of God.

The crowds understands this as such and responds with praise and adoration of a King and of God” (see verse 17 – “out of babes…”)

  1. In the cleansing of the temple He displays that He is a zealous reformer of true worship. (21:12-17)

The Kings of the OT were responsible for the purity of worship – they were to be the reformers of worship. This is true of the Messiah.

Jesus’ actions were not an attempt to change all the practices of moneychanging at that moment – He was acting out a symbol. This is a symbol of authority.

He is the King who will bring a new worship – He will be the temple and He will make priests (the Church).

Isaiah 56:7 – “my house shall be called a house of prayer for all people”

The house of God (Temple) had become a badge of ethnic pride and exclusion

Jeremiah 7:11 – says that the temple is filled with a den of robbers.

John 2:13-22 ESV  The Passover of the Jews was at hand, and Jesus went up to Jerusalem.  (14)  In the temple he found those who were selling oxen and sheep and pigeons, and the money-changers sitting there.  (15)  And making a whip of cords, he drove them all out of the temple, with the sheep and oxen. And he poured out the coins of the money-changers and overturned their tables.  (16)  And he told those who sold the pigeons, "Take these things away; do not make my Father's house a house of trade."  (17)  His disciples remembered that it was written, "Zeal for your house will consume me."  (18)  So the Jews said to him, "What sign do you show us for doing these things?"  (19)  Jesus answered them, "Destroy this temple, and in three days I will raise it up."  (20)  The Jews then said, "It has taken forty-six years to build this temple, and will you raise it up in three days?"  (21)  But he was speaking about the temple of his body.  (22)  When therefore he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this, and they believed the Scripture and the word that Jesus had spoken.

Jesus actions were saying – I am bringing reform to God’s people in how they meet God. I am the Temple. I am the Priest. You will come to God through Me.

What does this mean today?

Jesus humbly laid down his life to save and was raised on the third day.

The Scriptures say that He is the Savior. He is the King. He has ascended and sits at the right hand of God with all authority. He is the way to God.

1 Corinthians 15:25 ESV  (25)  For he must reign until he has put all his enemies under his feet.

Psalms 2:6-8 ESV  "As for me, I have set my King on Zion, my holy hill."  (7)  I will tell of the decree: The LORD said to me, "You are my Son; today I have begotten you.  (8)  Ask of me, and I will make the nations your heritage, and the ends of the earth your possession.

Psalms 110:1-2 ESV  A Psalm of David. The LORD says to my Lord: "Sit at my right hand, until I make your enemies your footstool."  (2)  The LORD sends forth from Zion your mighty scepter. Rule in the midst of your enemies!

Isaiah 9:6-7 ESV  For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.  (7)  Of the increase of his government and of peace there will be no end, on the throne of David and over his kingdom, to establish it and to uphold it with justice and with righteousness from this time forth and forevermore. The zeal of the LORD of hosts will do this.

Acts 2:33-39 ESV  Being therefore exalted at the right hand of God, and having received from the Father the promise of the Holy Spirit, he has poured out this that you yourselves are seeing and hearing.  (34)  For David did not ascend into the heavens, but he himself says, "'The Lord said to my Lord, Sit at my right hand,  (35)  until I make your enemies your footstool.'  (36)  Let all the house of Israel therefore know for certain that God has made him both Lord and Christ, this Jesus whom you crucified."  (37)  Now when they heard this they were cut to the heart, and said to Peter and the rest of the apostles, "Brothers, what shall we do?"  (38)  And Peter said to them, "Repent and be baptized every one of you in the name of Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of your sins, and you will receive the gift of the Holy Spirit.  (39)  For the promise is for you and for your children and for all who are far off, everyone whom the Lord our God calls to himself."

CONCLUSION

How should we respond?
