Let me
begin by reading some questions taken from a book by Christian
Counselor and pastor – Paul David Tripp:
Let me ask what may seem
like a stupid question. Do you know where you live? No, I don't mean
your street address. I want you to see the most deeply spiritual and
profoundly personal implications of this question.
Do you bring to each day the
realistic expectations that come from a cogent understanding of your
life, yourself, and your world? Still confused? Then let's break it
down a little.
Is there anything that is
disappointing you right now? Is there a relationship or situation
that is leaving you hurt and confused? Are there personal problems
that you simply have not been able to solve? Do you ever feel
alienated, alone, or misunderstood? Have you had to deal with
mistreatment or injustice lately? Have you been hurt, angry,
fearful, or discouraged? Is there any place in your life where you
feel like giving up or giving in? Does your life ever seem much more
complicated than it should be? Does it seem like you are always
having to deal with obstacles of one kind or another?
Do you wish you didn't have
so many problems on your plate? Does it bug you that even the easy
things in life don't turn out to be nearly as easy as you thought
they would be?
Are there problems in your
past that still haunt you? Do you regularly face difficulties you
have sought to solve, but which still lie open and festering? Have
you ever envied someone else's life? Have you ever wished you could
start over in some area of life, but you know you can't? Have you
ever felt too weak and too unqualified to deal with what is
confronting you? Does your life seem to move too fast for you ever
to be able to catch up? Has there ever been a day in your life that
was fundamentally problem-free? (23-24)
To use an
analogy from Tripp’s book – we live in a Broken-Down House.
Paint the
picture of this metaphor.
1. We live
in a broken-down house because of sin.
§Everything is tainted
§Nothing works properly
§We are included in this
§Because of sin and the Fall
Genesis 3:14-19 The
LORD God said to the serpent, "Because you have done this, cursed
are you above all livestock and above all beasts of the field; on
your belly you shall go, and dust you shall eat all the days of your
life. (15) I will put enmity between you and the woman, and
between your offspring and her offspring; he shall bruise your head,
and you shall bruise his heel." (16) To the woman he said, "I will
surely multiply your pain in childbearing; in pain you shall bring
forth children. Your desire shall be for your husband, and he shall
rule over you." (17) And to Adam he said, "Because you have
listened to the voice of your wife and have eaten of the tree of
which I commanded you, 'You shall not eat of it,' cursed is the
ground because of you; in pain you shall eat of it all the days of
your life; (18) thorns and thistles it shall bring forth for you;
and you shall eat the plants of the field. (19) By the sweat of
your face you shall eat bread, till you return to the ground, for
out of it you were taken; for you are dust, and to dust you shall
return."
Genesis 6:5 The LORD
saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that
every intention of the thoughts of his heart was only evil
continually.
Romans 3:9-18 What
then? Are we Jews any better off? No, not at all. For we have
already charged that all, both Jews and Greeks, are under sin,
(10) as it is written: "None is righteous, no, not one; (11) no
one understands; no one seeks for God. (12) All have turned aside;
together they have become worthless; no one does good, not even
one." (13) "Their throat is an open grave; they use their tongues
to deceive." "The venom of asps is under their lips." (14) "Their
mouth is full of curses and bitterness." (15) "Their feet are
swift to shed blood; (16) in their paths are ruin and misery,
(17) and the way of peace they have not known." (18) "There is no
fear of God before their eyes."
Romans 8:20-21 For
the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because
of him who subjected it, in hope (21) that the creation itself
will be set free from its bondage to corruption and obtain the
freedom of the glory of the children of God.
EPHESIANS:
Ephesians 2:1-3 And
you were dead in the trespasses and sins (2) in which you once
walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of
the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of
disobedience-- (3) among whom we all once lived in the passions of
our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and
were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind.
Ephesians 4:17-19
Now this I say and testify in the Lord, that you must no longer walk
as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their minds. (18) They are
darkened in their understanding, alienated from the life of God
because of the ignorance that is in them, due to their hardness of
heart. (19) They have become callous and have given themselves up
to sensuality, greedy to practice every kind of impurity.
Ephesians 5:15-16
Look carefully then how you walk, not as unwise but as wise, (16)
making the best use of the time, because the days are evil.
Ephesians 6:11-12
Put on the whole armor of God, that you may be able to stand against
the schemes of the devil. (12) For we do not wrestle against flesh
and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against
the cosmic powers over this present darkness, against the spiritual
forces of evil in the heavenly places.
Why is this
important to know?
§Forgetting this sets us up
for disappointment and frustration
§Forgetting this sets us up
for failure and defeat
§Forgetting this sets us up
for ineffectiveness and futility.
§Forgetting this sets us up
for pride and judgmentalism.
2. A
gracious Restorer has come to this house with promise of
restoration.
The Restorer is Jesus!
Romans 8:18-24 For I
consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth
comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us. (19) For
the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the sons
of God. (20) For the creation was subjected to futility, not
willingly, but because of him who subjected it, in hope (21) that
the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to corruption
and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God. (22)
For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together in
the pains of childbirth until now. (23) And not only the creation,
but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan
inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, the redemption of
our bodies. (24) For in this hope we were saved. Now hope that is
seen is not hope. For who hopes for what he sees?
This hope is
promised to us in Ephesians:
Ephesians 1:7-10 In
him we have redemption through his blood, the forgiveness of our
trespasses, according to the riches of his grace, (8) which he
lavished upon us, in all wisdom and insight (9) making known to us
the mystery of his will, according to his purpose, which he set
forth in Christ (10) as a plan for the fullness of time, to unite
all things in him, things in heaven and things on earth.
Revelation 21:5 And
he who was seated on the throne said, "Behold, I am making all
things new." Also he said, "Write this down, for these words are
trustworthy and true."
Ephesians 1-3
is all about the Grace of God through the Gospel coming and saving
sinful man.
It is about
the Sovereign grace of God coming long before we would ever come to
Him.
It is about
dead sinners who have been made of alive and are now CHILDREN OF
GRACE.
We have been
FORGIVEN all by grace.
We have been
EMPOWERED for the present tasks he gives us.
We have been
promised DELIVERANCE as our gracious hope.
Ephesians 1-3
says that we need to KNOW. We need to know that the forgiveness is
greater than we first imagined.
We need to
recognize that the grace is completely free.
We need to
trust that the power he gives us to know live as His children is
mightier than our imaginations.
Ephesians 3:20-21
Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we
ask or think, according to the power at work within us, (21) to
him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all
generations, forever and ever. Amen.
3. This
Restorer calls us to a restoration lifestyle.
If chapters
1-3 tells us what we need to KNOW about what we have become (more on
that next week), chapters 4-6 in Ephesians tells us what we are to
do.
We are to live
a certain way in a broken-down world as broken-down people in need
of restoration.
Productivity in a Restoration Project
It is hard to
be productive when things are in the middle of a construction
project.
We are called
to a RESTORATION LIFESTYLE.
“Live a life
worthy of your calling”
Here is what
it looks like in one way:
§Submit yourselves to the
Restorer’s Work in Your Own Life
§Submit yourselves to the
Restorer’s Work in Others
Acknowledge
your own condition
Admit Your
Neediness
Look at
Circumstances differently
Look at people
differently
Imagine yourself as a living
house. God comes in to rebuild that house. At first, perhaps, you
can understand what He is doing. He is getting the drains right and
stopping the leaks in the roof and so on; you knew that those jobs
needed doing and so you are not surprised. But presently He starts
knocking the house about in a way that hurts abominably and does not
seem to make any sense. What on earth is He up to? The explanation
is that He is building quite a different house from the one you
thought of - throwing out a new wing here, putting on an extra floor
there, running up towers, making courtyards. You thought you were
being made into a decent little cottage: but He is building a
palace. He intends to come and live in it Himself. (Lewis, Mere
Christianity)
